Nashville Starz - Pro American Smooth

Report by Wendy Johnson

First of all I would like to congratulate David (Hamilton) for organizing a very fun dance competition. Great attention to decorating the ballroom and supplying us with copious amounts of Southern food made the weekend very special. Bad weather proved to make it difficult for couples and spectators to get to the event and very difficult for us to get home after the event... in spite of these inconveniences the ballroom had an appreciative audience and a quarter final in the Professional American Smooth event...

I’ll Have a Slice Please!

There is nothing more annoying than to go to a pizza place ask for a slice and they give you a pot pie! Last night was the finale for the Tri-State Championships and it concluded with the “Best of the Best” competition but on the professional level, the four styles’ champions were invited to perform a solo of their choice all but the Professional Show Dance, I supposed that is not really a style that is just an add on! That’s what I tried to explain to Travis & Jaimee Tuft who won that division and who sounded a little disappointed to not be invited.  Had they danced the outcome of that event might have been a little different.

Professional Open Rhythm at Maryland Dancesport

Six couples were recalled to the final from an energetic quarter and for me the biggest battle was between the top three couples.  Left in the semifinal, but worthy of a mention were Rex & Rachel Jones who had a new look and a great night, Chen & Keller, Wayne & Simanekova who danced more strongly than the previous night.

A night of “Fantasia”

The last night of the United States Amateur Championships was like a night at “Fantasia,” the twinkling lights (cell phones) produced by the audience during the Viennese Waltz of the US Amateur Ballroom was as magical as the “Fantasia” movie, and as the couples danced to the 1,2,3 the audience waved from side to side giving us all a magical moment that could only be reproduced at BYU on a packed night at the Marriot Center in Provo, Utah.

“The Snow Couldn’t Stop ‘Em!” Nashville Starz 2016

Report by Keith Todd

Photography by Park West

Well actually it did stop a few!

Taking place in January, Nashville Starz is prone to North America’s weather extremes, but situated in the southern city of Nashville, TN, it should be well clear of the Northern snow-belt.  Not this year!  Over the weekend of January 23rd Nashville endured record snow fall as did much of the northeast.  This necessarily impacted travel all over the USA and indeed some dancers were unable to attend although they had fully intended to compete.  Nevertheless, plenty of us did make it and organizer, David Hamilton, showed gracious equanimity and the event was as special as it always is.
